A field between SALLAUMINES and BILLY MONTIGNY, there is a collapsed mine tunnel, 320 meters underground, that was the place of the greatest mining disaster in the history of Europe.

„10th of March is a tragic date for the biggest French industrial region. It was on the 10th of March in 1906 when at 6.30 in the morning a first, then second, and the third thump was heard in the Courierres mine, located just outside Billy Montigny. There were 1800 miners underground that day, and by the early afternoon 600 were rescued. Due to the heavy smoke and gases, and particularly due to the collapsed galleries it was impossible to rescue the remaining 1200. It was the greatest mining disaster as to this date. Today, after 22 years, when we consider the results of such a horrific catastrophe, we cannot remain indifferent to the fact that in the mining profession, there are thousands of casualties every year and tens of thousands of miners suffer horrible disfigurements that make them unfit for work till the end of their days.
